Rover Training

Whilst your time spent in Rovers should be fun and memorable, the opportunities for personal growth and development present themselves at many opportunities. The opportunity to play a major role in the organisational and management of major events either as an individual or in a small group provides countless hours of valuable of time to learn and apply skills in communication, teamwork and leadership. While the Scouting method is "learning by doing", there are structured courses provided which aim to further your own development

When you first join a crew you will be allocated a sponsor, who is an experienced Rover to make you feel welcome and make sure you find your place in the crew.  This person should be approachable and be there to answer any questions you may have.  This process is referred to as Squire Training, where one is developing their skills as a Rover, before being invest as a Rover Knight. While each Crew has different format of their Squire Training, the concepts remain the same.

The first of the structured training courses available is Basic Rover Training.  This is a two session course (one weeknight and one weekend) which covers a wide range of topics ranging from outdoor skills, how to develop a good program, promotion ideas and the basic concepts of runnign a successful Crew.  While you will learn a lot and have a great time participating in the activities on the course, the real test is whether you will be able to apply what you have learned in a crew situation.  To successfully complete this level of training, you will have to demonstrate that you have benefited from this training and can successfully apply it.

The advanced level courses are focussed on leadership.  Having developed the necessary skills and had the opportunity to apply them, you will learn more about how to get the most out of yourself and others.  You will learn about different leadership and motivation theories, the principles of counselling, and how to incorporate some of the more subtle aspects of the fundamentals of Scouting into a program.  This level of training also involves working with leaders from other youth sections and is mostly self directed.  The amount you get out of these courses depends on how much you put in.

The Branch Rover Council (BRC) recognises that Rovers are required to hold personal qualifications in many areas, both as a requirement of their membership of Scouts SA and in pursuit of an active calendar of Rover Events. To address this the BRC has implemented a scheme to assist Rovers in paying for courses they may undertake in pursuit of their personal and scouting development.
